The Psychology Department at the University of Southern Maine is welcoming applications to fill a full-time lecturer position in Psychology with a specialization in Physiological Psychology for Fall 2025, beginning September 2, 2025. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in their discipline to join a team of faculty in a growing department with a vibrant student body and warm community. In addition to teaching, the faculty member will provide formal academic advising to Psychology majors.

The faculty member will design and teach a mix of the following courses: Physiological Psychology, Experimental Methodology, Psychology of Learning, Cognitive Processes and Introduction to Psychology, in addition to other courses in alignment with the candidate's expertise. We are especially interested in applicants who can demonstrate their direct contributions to students' academic success and persistence through active and engaged learning, mentoring, and advising. The teaching load for this position is 4 courses per semester.

Primary duties will include, but are not limited to, undergraduate teaching in psychological science, effective student advising/mentoring, and service to the department. The successful candidate may also have opportunities to teach courses that satisfy CORE requirements. The Department is housed within the College of Science, Technology, and Health. Department offices are located on the Portland campus where the majority of courses are held, but courses may be offered on any USM campus or online, depending upon faculty availability and interest, among other factors.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Southern Maine offers a BA degree within the College of Science, Technology, and Health that can be accomplished in 4 years with full-time study. We also offer a minor in psychology for students in other majors. Our focus is on educating students on the fundamentals of scientific theories and research methods within the field and preparing them for graduate-level studies and professions where they can utilize the wide array of skills and knowledge that the degree confers: the ability to systematically analyze problems, use critical thinking to evaluate information, and understand human social dynamics and the ways we learn and process information.

The targeted starting date for this position will begin in Fall 2025 on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $51,000. This is an on campus, in-person teaching position. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of "student focused every day" and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Psychology or related discipline by the time of appointment (estimated 9/2/2025).
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate courses in psychology.
  • Experience/interest in applying innovative learning practices (e.g., flipped classroom, discussion-based instruction).
  • Commitment to/experience in fully engaging with students as an instructor and advisor.
  • Commitment to/experience with diversity-related issues relevant to mental health and well-being.
  • Commitment to departmental, university, community, and disciplinary service.
