Job Description

The Theatre Department at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for several part-time faculty positions in the areas of musical theatre performance, design, and technology for the upcoming academic year.

Through a wide-ranging production season, interdisciplinary collaborations, community and school outreach, and interactive theatre experiences, the University of Southern Maine's Department of Theatre contributes to the rich cultural, creative, and artistic life of the greater Portland area and the state of Maine.

Courses requiring coverage for the 2024/2025 academic year:

• Topics in Theatre: Acting the Song (THE 280) - Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 Semesters: This course will investigate theatre topics not already covered by regular course offerings
• Practicum in Costume (THE 104) - Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters: A course focusing on sewing skills and costume construction, as well as working on University theatre productions.
• Practicum in Stage Lighting (THE 105) - Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 Semesters: A course focusing on the practical application of contemporary stage lighting technology and the implementation of a lighting plot, as well as working on University productions.
• Scene Design (THE 331) - Fall 2024 Semester: Lecture and practicum in stage scenic design. Emphasis on the visual art and drafting of designs.

Part time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior college teaching experience. In addition, USM employees, have access to the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s) with their USM Card. USM also offers Part time faculty the opportunity for development through the Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD), the chance to get online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other development opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

Required Qualifications for THE 280:

• BA or BFA in Musical Theatre
• Advanced degree completion in theatre or liberal arts
• Experience directing fully produced musicals at the college level
• Demonstrated knowledge of current musical theatre industry practices, repertoire, styles, and pedagogies, including application of established acting techniques (e.g., personalization, action/objective work).
• Diverse teaching skills suited to various learning styles, focusing on student-centered learning.
• Proficiency in musicianship, including sight-reading and sight-singing.
• Acting/performance experience with the ability to model and demonstrate for students.

Required Qualifications for THE 104,105, and 331:

• Demonstrated professional experience in scenic design, lighting, and costume technologies.
• Experience working with, instructing, and supervising college-aged theatre students.
• Ability to join a collaborative and collegial department of professional theatre practitioners.
• Recognition of current industry practices that are student-focused, diverse, inclusive, and equitable.
